About the Kente cloth
Kente cloth originates from the Ashanti region in Ghana. It is a royal cloth and known as the cloth for kings and queens. It is usually worn only on very special occasions and in times of extreme importance. The Kente cloth carries a symbol of prestige and quality.
Kente comes from the Akan word “kenten” meaning basket which explains the kind of weave that is used to make the cloth. It is known as the icon of African cultural heritage around the world. It is made of silk and or cotton hand woven into strips. The strips are then joined together usually by hand or machine, to form a dazzling multicolored patterns of bold designs, bright colors and geometric shapes.
Kente is the best known of all African textiles and although many think the colors of genuine kente are the red, green, gold, blue, black color combination, yet this is not true. Kente can be in any combination of colors and sometimes as few as two. Although the kente design has been widely adopted into screen printed fabric yet the genuine kente cloth can be identified by the weight being heavier than regular cotton fabric, the geometric design and woven strips joined together and NOT printed on.
